How to care for enamel jewellery
Enamel is glass fused to a metal, many metals are used including gold, silver, copper and steel. Enamel is delicate and will chip if knocked and crack if the metal is bent. Understanding the nature of it is very important so that you will always get the very best from the jewellery you wear. I will repair any of my jewellery that has sustained some damage, email for further details.
A tip to keep your silver jewellery from tarnishing.
The air tarnishes silver jewellery and will turn it black in time, so after you have cleaned it or worn it store in an air-tight container or plastic bag.
How to clean your silver jewellery.
Sitting on a beach in Thailand I was inspecting my ear-rings and thought they looked a little tarnished. Having nothing with me to polish them up I used the sand on the beach with water and gently rubbed them. It gave the ear-rings a lovely clean, matt finish and the tarnish disappeared. The grains of sand were very tiny and I certainly would not recommend builders sand or many types of beach sand as the grains are not small enough. If your jewellery has a very highly polished surface then using sand would not be an option, as the sand gradually scratches the surface and would leave you with a matt surface and not a shiny one.
Sand.
I do supply a fine sand very reasonably, use the contact page. Add to water, enough to cover, the fine sand will gently scratch the surface so go in the direction of the jewellery. To keep the sand gently pour off the water (the sand will stay at the bottom of the dish) and then place over a radiator to dry out. Keep in your jewellery box in the plastic bag provided.
Other natural ways of cleaning your silver.
-
Use lemon juice and polish up with a soft cloth.
- Toothpaste is always available where ever you are, use a soft cloth and a pea sized amount and gently rub. Wash under the tap, if any toothpaste gets trapped very gently use a toothbrush.
- If you rummage around your DIY bits and pieces you might find some fine wire wool. If your jewellery has a matt finish and not a shiny one, gently rub the silver with the wire wool.
